The Lanark County Food Bank has been offering emergency assistance to those in need, often on an ongoing basis, since October, 1989. Donations of non- perishable food items are needed and donations of fresh fruit and vegetables are a real treat. Food items and/or money can be dropped off at the food bank at 5 Allan St., Carleton Place, K7C 1T1 or call Nancy Craig at 257-8546 to arrange a pick-up.
Options Bytown Non-Profit Housing Corporation in operation - since 1987 provides permanent housing and support services to 120 single men and women with a history of homelessness, addictions and mental illness. It is requesting cash donations, vouchers for grocery stores as well as turkeys with all the fixings to provide a Christmas dinner. Ottawa-Carleton Association for Persons with Developmental Disabilities founded in 1950, is the largest and longest-serving Association of its kind in Ottawa. It provides support to over 1,000 individuals living with a developmental disability in every aspect of life, be it living arrangements, day-to-day tasks or work opportunities. The Association is in need of monetary donations to support it's "Christmas Client Gift Fund". Many individuals living with a developmental disability have no family to support them. A Christmas gift is not just a "nice to have" item, but is often an essential piece of clothing, shampoo, toothpaste. A contribution to the "gift fund" or purchasing a gift directly for an individual with a developmental disability is requested. Odawa Native Friendship Centre will be providing 'Food for Friends Hampers' and Angel Tree gifts for children again this year. Minwaashin Lodge -- Aboriginal Women's Support Centre has been serving the community since 1993 helping Aboriginal women and children fleeing abuse or at risk of becoming homeless. The shelter operation, Oshki Lodge, open since 2001 is the only Aboriginal shelter in the City of Ottawa and the 19-bed shelter is full to capacity. It provides a safe, comfortable place for women and children to stay while the women and children rebuild their lives and integrate back into the community. About 300 moms, dads, youth, elders and children will attend a Children's Winter Gathering (Christmas party) on Dec. 18. Elizabeth Fry Society of Ottawa offers assistance to marginalized women and young women through a variety of programs and services. A team of staff and volunteers provide counselling, outreach, transitional housing, and support services.
The Society is currently gathering goods for its annual Women and Children's Winter Celebration, which will take place on Friday, Dec.15. They include women and children living in poverty, women whose partners are incarcerated, and families who are homeless, fleeing abuse or living in emergency shelters. Alwood Treatment Centre is a 14 bed, residential treatment facility for young people dealing with substance abuse issues. It provides treatment to youth between the ages of 16-22 from all across Ontario. Some clients who have absolutely no financial support look forward to going home to spend Christmas with family, While in treatment clients participate in a Christmas gift exchange ($25/client) with one another. Donations to cover these expenses would be greatly appreciated. Alwood tries to provide clients with a special Christmas dinner and any food or financial donations would be most helpful. Cornerstone Housing for Women is a ministry of the Anglican Church, providing safe emergency shelter and supportive housing to homeless women, along with meals clothing and practical help of all kinds. It helped almost 400 different women last year. Some of the items most needed at the Women's Shelter or the two Residences are: Financial contributions, bus tickets, Christmas gift packages such as linens, blankets, warm pajamas, hat, scarves, mitts, underwear, socks and toiletries. Christie Lake Kids provides recreational, skill-development programs to low-income children in Ottawa. It has operated Christie Lake Camp, since 1922, and an after-school program, S.T.A.R., since 1985. Each year the children who participate in the programs are invited to a Christmas Party. Gifts are needed for these low-income children, girls and boys, aged 6-14. Each new gift should be less than $10. The YMCA-YWCA has been providing people in the national capital region region with programs for personal development since 1867. Y initiatives range from physical fitness, to camping, to newcomer services, to day care, play care and leaders in training. Cash donations (for programs) and gifts such as new toys, clothing are requested for children ages 18 months to 12 years. Centretown Emergency Food Centre provides emergency food supplies to those in need in the Centretown area. It serves single people and families, providing a 3-4 day supply of groceries and some toiletries. It also provides referrals to other services and offers a free employment support program. Donations of canned goods and other non-perishable food items (pasta, canned tuna, canned fruit and vegetables), hats, mitts/gloves and monetary donations to help purchase fresh foods and staple items are needed to help fill Christmas hampers. The West Carleton Food Bank Christmas Basket Program welcomes donations of nonperishable foods, new toys and financial donations to be used to assist families in the West Carleton community. Brighter Futures for Children of Young Single Parents would appreciate new gifts or cash donations to help make Christmas a little brighter for young needy families. The Gloucester Emergency Food Cupboard opened in January 1989 in response to increasing requests for emergency food from churches and local resource centres. It supplies emergency food to families and individuals in need within the community of Gloucester. During the Christmas season, it supplements the regular food orders with a voucher for the purchase of a turkey and with seasonal foods such as cookies, candies, fruit cake, pancake mix and syrup, cans of fruit, jam, pickles, cheese spread. Money donated at this time will be used to offset the costs of the turkey vouchers and for those food items that have not been donated. RNJ Youth Services has been operating since 1987 and is committed to assisting youth ages 12-17 years by providing programs in the Lanark, Leeds and Grenville Counties. It has just established a Rebound Program which targets at-risk youth. Rebound is a prevention and early intervention social skills program which is volunteer intensive -- supports youth in developing the skills that promote a positive response to self, others and community. RNJ Youth Services is seeking donations to assist in setting up the classroom where these sessions will take place. Currently there is no funding from outside sources to support this new initiative. The Waupoos Foundation, established with a focus on families in need and offers a family vacation with a difference. Christmas at Waupoos has up to 5 families staying in the cottages for the week and receiving a food basket. Christmas Hamper Project is co-sponsored by McLeod-Stewarton United Church and Southminster and Glebe-St. James. About 150 families who need hampers are referred by five agencies providing a client profile: the first name, age, gender and size of each family member as well as special needs and foods to avoid. The hamper is made up of food for Christmas week, some toiletries, socks and a gift (usually other warm clothing). Referrals are cross-referenced at the Christmas Exchange to eliminate duplication of other programs.
You can be matched with a recipient family and provide them with a hamper. Volunteers are needed to pack hampers, wrap gifts and drivers to deliver hampers. Donations of money or clothing (e.g. warm socks, hats, mittens, long underwear) are requested. Amethyst Women's Addiction Centre has worked with women, individually and in groups, who are concerned about their substance use and/or problem gambling since 1979. It also works in groups with women and children at high risk of developing an addiction, to help prevent addiction through education and social action. The Kidney Foundation of Canada has been meeting the needs of kidney patients and their families since 1964. The Eastern Ontario Branch collects monetary donations to purchase grocery store gift certificates for kidney patients who are in need. All recipients are referred by a social worker. The certificates enable patients and their families to enjoy a festive holiday meal, which they otherwise could not do. Maison Therese Dallaire ( where refugees and newcomers stay) will hold a Christmas Party on December 17. Christmas Smiles for Seniors is a volunteer initiative, started in December 2000. Its goal is to ensure seniors in the Ottawa area with little or no family, friends or means receive a Christmas gift and know they are remembered at this special time of year. Last year, Christmas cheer was provided to some 1,200 seniors. A donor is matched up with a senior, who has provided a wish/request. Donations of personal hygiene items (ie.talc powder, lotions, aftershave, bubble bath, tooth brush), PJ's, chocolates and, blanket/throws are requested. Gifts should be in the $20 range. Volunteer elves interested in either providing a gift donation, or helping to recruit other gift donors are needed. Villa Marconi Long Term Care Centre requires volunteers and donations to support 125 long term care residents. Barrhaven Emergency Food Cupboard is looking for families/groups/schools/churches who would like to sponsor a needy family in Barrhaven for a Christmas Hamper. Donations of food for a full Christmas dinner, as well as some extra food items are requested. For a family of four this would include items such as: turkey, 1 box of dressing, potatoes, vegetables, fruits, cranberries, milk, pasta, cereals, bread and much more. Detailed information about the age, sex, and interests/requests of the children 16 years and under will be provided. It is suggested that each child receives five presents - usually 1 larger gift, (a Barbie or Lego) and 4 smaller gifts including a hat and mittens. Friends of Abandoned Pets has been rescuing abandoned cats and dogs in the Ottawa area since April 1992. Stray animals are placed in foster homes and provide veterinary care until permanent, loving homes are found. Since 1995, the Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa, Young Women's Emergency Shelter, has provide safe emergency shelter to young women of average age of 17 years who cannot live with their families for a variety of reasons. Some of these reasons include abuse, parent-child conflict and neglect. At the shelter, young women are able to meet their basic needs along with support, information, and resources for them to re-integrate back to the community in a long term housing situation. It will host a Christmas dinner for those staying at the shelter over the holidays. Donations of phone cards, bus tickets, gift certificates for groceries and major department stores would be appreciated. The Christmas season can be difficult for many people who do not have safe and positive contacts with their family. Orleans-Cumberland Community Resource Centre: The Centre serves the needs of low-income families living in the Orleans and Cumberland Wards of the City of Ottawa. During the holiday season it provides a Christmas food basket and gifts for the children. The Well is a Community Ministry of The Anglican Diocese of Ottawa serving a nutritional meal and a variety of recreational, educational and cultural activities on average to 125 visitors per day. It will host its annual Christmas Party on Monday, Dec. 22 for 150 women and their children. In The Spirit of Christmas Ted Long and Mike Deslaurier of Soft Strokes Decorating have teamed up with Sonny's Bar and Grill and many other businesses, to provide Christmas to the less fortunate families in the community. Ottawa Innercity Ministries Christmas hamper for the poor and homeless. Gather your family, friends or work associates together and build some 'Christmas Street Survival Kits' for the cold months ahead. The kit would include: Large backpack that contains a clean, new sleeping bag new pair of water resistant gloves (large), warm winter socks, toque in dark colour, juice boxes (tetra pack), plain chocolate bar (no nuts), toothbrush, toothpaste, bar of soap, Bookmark relating a Christmas story. The Food Bank provides food for people in our region when they are unable to provide adequately for themselves and their families. Last month alone, 36,500 people received assistance through the food programs supplied by The
Food Bank. Forty percent of those needing help were children. Non-perishable food donations including soups, tuna, cereal and pasta can be dropped off at most Loeb and Loblaws supermarkets in the Ottawa area. Baby food, diapers, holiday treats are requested. Nelson House of Ottawa-Carleton has provided since 1992, a safe emergency shelter for women and their children who have experienced spousal/partner abuse. It urgently needs cash donations to ensure continuation of programs and services. Donations of bus tickets and gift certificates for major food, hardware and department stores would be appreciated. St. Mary's Home has continuously served the Ottawa community since 1933 working with pregnant youth, teen parents and their children. The group residence/shelter houses 15 young people and up to five newborn infants at a time. Its community support, outreach and programs are giving hope to some 250 youth and their children annually. The Salvation Army Bethany Hope Centre is a multiservice agency that has been serving pregnant and parenting youth 13 to 25 years old and their children since 1996. Bereaved Families of ON-Ottawa Region (BFO) has been offering support to the bereaved since 1978. Its mandate is peer support for those who experienced the death of a family member or significant other. Closed groups offered are Loss of a Child, Loss of Spouse, Teen Support group, Lossof Parent/Sibling/ Friend, Loss by Miscarriage/Baby born still/death of a baby under one year of age. A drop-in Support and Share Night runs the first Tuesday of every month. The December Support and Share Night will include a Candle Lighting Ceremony. The other Christmas Event is the Remembrance Tree Service on Sunday, Dec. 12, at 2 p.m. at Ottawa City Hall. Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind provides professionally trained guide dogs to visually impaired Canadians. Canadian It receives no government funding and relies on donations to operate, at a cost of approximately $35,000 to train each guide dog. Various items for Christmas gift giving include unique hand-made doggy bone wreaths, Christmas cards featuring various dog photos, from which all proceeds are directed towards the training of guide dogs for the visually impaired. The signs are available in different shapes and colours and can include carved images such as a fish or loon. The Orleans Lions Club is a dedicated group of volunteers that help raise money for local charity. The Dave Smith Youth Treatment Centre is the only substance abuse treatment centre in Eastern Ontario dedicated exclusively to youth between the ages of 13-18. The Centre offers a welcoming environment and day-treatment for youth that combines school with drug and alcohol counseling. Last year, the Centre helped 700 youth and their families, a 400 percent increase from when it first opened in 1993. Holiday Cards In Support of Troubled Youth are being sold -- festive holiday cards for sale with all proceeds going directly to the Dave Smith Youth Treatment Centre. The Corkery Community Association and the Volunteer Firefighters of the Corkery Fire Station will be selling Balsam and Scots Pine Christmas trees at the West Carleton Municipal Garage located at 2941 March Road (just

The Ottawa Rotary Home has offered 24 hour respite care essential to families who have a child with a physical disability or who are medically fragile in a 12 bed home in the centre of Ottawa. Christmas Day dinner delivery -- the Hunt Club/Riverside Community Services Centre, in collaboration with The Anglican Church of the Resurrection, Holy Cross Church and the Riverside United Church are delivering Christmas dinners to people who are unable to access the other dinner programs on Christmas Day. Dinner will include turkey with all of the trimmings and dessert. We require donated money or food items: turkey, potatoes, vegetables, stuffing, desserts, volunteers to cook the turkeys in their homes and bring them to the church, volunteers to help prepare the dinners, and volunteers to deliver the meals.
